Japan's de facto capital for 150 years in the 12th–14th centuries — unlike Kyoto, seaside and compact. Around 100 temples and shrines fold into hillsides, with the Great Buddha (Kotoku-in) as the undisputed star. Easy to combine with Enoshima on one long day trip since the Enoden line connects them.
