Bishamon-do

毘沙門堂

👀 SEE

Also known as Bishamondo

A temple out in Yamashina that rarely makes tourist lists, which is exactly why it's worth the detour in autumn — the maples in the grounds go deeply red and it's quiet enough to actually photograph. Outer grounds are free; the inner temple is 500 yen. Next door is a tatami-mat cafe with huge window seats looking out at the foliage — the rain-day play.

Type temple, autumn leaves
💡 Local tips

  • The cafe next door has tatami window seats over the garden — best rain shelter in Yamashina.
⚠️ Heads up
  • Out of the way — skip if your Kyoto trip is under 3 days.
