The hillside temple that anchors east Kyoto, founded in 778 on the foothills of Mount Otowa. Entry is 500 yen and it's the obvious starting point for the Higashiyama walk down through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. Both sources call it essential; fair warning that in peak autumn even 6:30am doesn't clear the crowds. The temple's namesake Otowa waterfall splits into three streams — longevity, success, love. Pick one; drinking from all three is considered greedy.
The mountain shrine with thousands of orange torii gates climbing the slope of Mount Inari — the most photographed shrine in Japan. Free, open 24/7, 10 minutes from Kyoto Station. The trick most tourists miss: the front gates are hammered with crowds, but the full mountain loop takes about two hours and thins out dramatically as you climb. The mossy inner retreat is the secret payoff.
Wild Japanese macaques on top of a hill in Arashiyama. 500 yen entry. You climb up for 20–30 minutes, reach the open summit, and a troop of macaques is casually hanging around. You can feed them by hand from inside a protected structure. Panoramic view of Kyoto from the top is a bonus.
The Kyoto branch of Japan's largest secondhand anime/manga/collectibles chain. Cheaper finds than the Tokyo flagships because there's less tourist traffic — retro cards, figures, Dragon Ball and One Piece stock, all well-preserved.
A 25-minute ride on a restored open-sided vintage train that threads the Hozu River canyon between Arashiyama and Kameoka. Autumn is peak, with the maples reaching over the tracks. Don't take the train both ways — the 2-hour Hozu river cruise back is the better return.
The river that bisects Kyoto north-to-south — and by local consensus the city's best hangout. Wide grassy banks, perfectly spaced couples sitting an identical distance apart (a running Kyoto joke), konbini food, and birds wading the shallows. One source flatly calls it her favorite thing about Kyoto.
Rooftop bar on top of a Higashiyama hotel with a wide view over east Kyoto — the pagodas poke up through the cityscape. Cold-night-friendly: fireplaces, blankets, heating lamps, and a signature warm yuzu-sake drink that tastes like alcoholic tea. Good last-night move.
A 2-kilometer stone footpath along a small canal, flanked by a few hundred cherry trees — named after a philosopher who famously walked it daily. Best in peak sakura, decent year-round. Runs Nanzen-ji at the south end to Ginkaku-ji at the north.
