Kiyomizu-dera

清水寺

👀 SEE

Also known as Pure Water Monastery, Kiyomizu Temple, Kiyomizudera Temple

The hillside temple that anchors east Kyoto, founded in 778 on the foothills of Mount Otowa. Entry is 500 yen and it's the obvious starting point for the Higashiyama walk down through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. Both sources call it essential; fair warning that in peak autumn even 6:30am doesn't clear the crowds. The temple's namesake Otowa waterfall splits into three streams — longevity, success, love. Pick one; drinking from all three is considered greedy.

💡 Local tips
  • Arrive before 8am to taxi up to the front gate — after 8am taxis can't get through and you walk 15–30 min.
  • Pick one Otowa stream: longevity, success, or love. Drinking all three is greedy.
  • 500 yen entry.
⚠️ Heads up
  • Peak autumn is packed before sunrise — there's no shot-clearing hour.
