Both formats work well on the TMB. The trail is waymarked in all three countries, there are villages and bus links along the way, and the hut wardens' association runs a single booking platform for its members. Independent hikers can therefore plan the whole loop themselves. Self-guided packages mainly save effort: they secure beds in the busiest months, move luggage between valley stops and provide route notes. A guided group adds a leader who navigates in snow or fog, changes the plan when a pass is unsafe and explains the landscape along the way. Guiding is most useful for first-time multi-day hikers and for early-season departures, when snow can still cover waymarks on the high passes.

Medians are per person, per day, land only, twin share, in USD at today's rate.

About the Tour du Mont Blanc

The TMB is a loop of roughly 170 km around the Mont Blanc massif. It crosses France, Italy and Switzerland and ends where it began, in Les Houches. Most days follow the same pattern: a long climb to a pass, an equally long descent into the next valley, and a night in a refuge, gîte or village hotel. Stages are usually 10 to 20 km, and the climbing adds up to close to 10,000 m over the whole loop. The paths are well waymarked and need no climbing gear. What makes it hard is stamina: carrying a pack day after day and coping with steep descents. The scenery moves from glaciers and high pastures to larch forest and small villages, and the border passes at Col de la Seigne and Grand Col Ferret are high points in both senses.

When to go

The normal season runs from mid-June to mid-September, when the passes are usually clear and the refuges are open. June has flowers and quieter paths, but snow can linger on the north side of passes such as the Col du Bonhomme and the Fenêtre d'Arpette, and waymarks may be buried. Poles, and sometimes crampons, are advised, and some huts have not opened yet. July and August bring the most reliable conditions and the most services, along with the biggest crowds and the hardest bookings. September is cooler and calmer, with shorter days, a chance of early snow and some refuges closing during the month. In any month, set off early: summer thunderstorms usually build in the afternoon.

Permits and booking timeline

You don't need a permit to walk the TMB, so the real constraint is finding beds. The wardens' association opens bookings for its member refuges and gîtes in mid-October for the following summer: for 2027 that is 15 October 2026. Popular stages and July–August dates fill quickly, so book the scarcest nights first and plan the rest around them. Bookings take a deposit, changes can be made online until 30 days before arrival, and earlier cancellations refund 80% of the deposit. Camping is tightly controlled. It is banned across the Aosta Valley and most of the Valais route, and several French nature reserves require an online booking for designated bivouac areas. French authorities have also announced stricter overnight rules for 2027, so check before you go.

Tour du Mont Blanc FAQ

How fit do I need to be for the Tour du Mont Blanc?

You don't need technical skills, but you do need the endurance to walk 5 to 8 hours a day, several days in a row, carrying a pack of about 8 to 10 kg, with a pass to climb and descend almost every day. At a 10-day pace that works out to about 17 km and 1,000 m of ascent per day. A 7-day trip is closer to 24 km and 1,400 m. The wardens' association recommends training on varied terrain beforehand.

What is the best month to hike the TMB?

The season runs from mid-June to mid-September. July and August have the most reliable conditions and every hut open, but they are also the busiest months. Late June and September are quieter. Expect leftover snow on some passes in June and early July, and some refuges closing during September.

Should I stay in huts or hotels?

Most hikers mix the two. Mountain refuges and gîtes offer dormitory beds with half board (dinner and breakfast), and some have private rooms. The valley villages along the route, such as Les Contamines, Courmayeur, La Fouly, Champex and Trient, have hotels and guesthouses. The official booking platform lets you filter by private room, dormitory or camping. Blankets are provided in refuges, but you need your own sleeping-bag liner.

What drives the cost of a TMB trip?

The biggest factors are the number of nights (usually 7 to 12) and the type of room. If you book refuges directly, dormitory half board costs about €65–95 per night, or roughly €500–900 in total for 7–10 days. Private rooms and hotels cost more. Guided or self-guided packages add services such as luggage transfers, a guide and booking handling. Bring cash in euros and Swiss francs for extras.

Which direction should I walk the TMB?

Anticlockwise from Les Houches is the classic choice, and the official site says it is the most common and best-waymarked direction. Walking clockwise is perfectly possible, and it can help you find free beds if your dates are fixed.

How crowded is the Tour du Mont Blanc?

It is one of the busiest treks in Europe. In high season, refuges and other accommodation are often fully booked several months ahead, especially from mid-July to mid-August. June and September are noticeably quieter, though with the snow and hut-opening caveats above.
