Tour du Mont Blanc
21 operators · 134 tours · 500 departures with space
7–12 days · 170 km · 3/5 Challenging
24 operators run 61 Dolomites Alta Via 1 tours on Tripperoni. 50 fixed departures still have space for summer 2027, and 16 self-guided tours start on dates you choose. Dates for 25 tours from 8 operators aren't tracked here: we list them from their public details. Per-person prices run from $224 (guided group, 2 days) to $7,895 (guided group, 13 days), a median of $230 per day.
On the official stage data the route averages about 10 km and 600 m of ascent a day over 12 stages, or about 14 km and 810 m at the 9-day pace (level 2 on numbers alone); but the stages are graded T to EE/EEA, reach 2,752 m, include exposed ground and fixed-rope sections (each with a walking alternative) and finish with very long descents, so the scale's "or rough terrain" clause makes it level 3, the same as the TMB. Fees · Braies combined ticket 2026
In 2026 the combined ticket for driving to Lago di Braies during the regulated hours cost €44: a full-day transit permit, a guaranteed parking spot and a €22 voucher for local restaurants and shops (the voucher only with advance booking). 2027 prices not yet published.
Huts & refuges · Biella · Booking opens
Rifugio Biella (the first hut, above Lago di Braies): bookings for 2027 open on 1 November 2026 according to the hut's text; a banner on the same page says 15 November, so confirm the date with the hut. A 50% deposit is taken and is not refundable. The hut opens in June 2027.
Huts & refuges · Biella · Booking terms
Rifugio Biella: the 50% deposit paid to guarantee a booking is not refunded on cancellation. The hut will open in June 2027 (exact date not given).
Huts & refuges · Where to book refuges
There is no single booking platform for the Alta Via 1. Each rifugio takes reservations on its own website, form or phone, and each sets its own opening dates, deposits and cancellation terms. Some CAI huts, such as Rifugio Nuvolau, are also bookable on the national CAI portal prenotarifugi.cai.it, which lists 'Alta via 1 Dolomiti' among the routes passing the hut.
Huts & refuges · Carestiato · Booking opens
Rifugio Carestiato (CAI Agordo): 2027 bookings open on 2 November 2026, online only.
Huts & refuges · Dolomiti bellunesi · Season
The huts inside the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park (which include Rifugio Pian de Fontana and Rifugio 7 Alpini on the southern end of the route) are open in summer, usually June to September; contact each manager for other periods.
Huts & refuges · Lagazuoi · Booking terms
Rifugio Lagazuoi (2,752 m, the highest point of the route): a 50% deposit is held at booking and is never refunded; cancelling in the last 3 days or not showing up forfeits the whole booking. 2026 summer prices: dormitory bed with breakfast €85 per person, dinner (half board) €35, double room with breakfast €250 per room. Summer 2027 opening dates and prices were not published on 18 October 2026.
Huts & refuges · Lagazuoi · Rooms
Rifugio Lagazuoi has both private rooms (first floor, some with a balcony, renovated in 2024, shared bathrooms on the floor) and dormitories with bunk beds. The hut notes that private-room availability is limited.
Huts & refuges · Nuvolau · Booking opens
Bookings for Rifugio Nuvolau for summer 2027 open in January 2027 (exact day not given), through the hut's own website.
Huts & refuges · Nuvolau · Season
Rifugio Nuvolau (CAI Cortina) is planned to be open 20 June to 20 September 2027; summer only. 2027 bookings open in January 2027 on the hut's own website.
Huts & refuges · Refuge opening dates
Official tourism sources give the hut season as June to September. Individual huts differ: some open in late May or early June and a few stay open into October, others open mid-June and close around 20 September. In June and September some huts are not yet open or have already closed; confirm every night with the hut.
Huts & refuges · Pian de fontana · Season
Rifugio Pian de Fontana (CAI Longarone, 1,632 m): 2026 season was Saturday 6 June to Wednesday 30 September. The 2027 season had not been published on 18 October 2026.
Huts & refuges · Settimo alpini · Season
Rifugio 7 Alpini (CAI Belluno, Pis Pilon, 1,502 m, the last hut): 2026 season was 30 May to 27 September, with a few October weekend openings depending on weather. The 2027 season had not been published on 18 October 2026. The hut rents ferrata kits (by reservation).
Huts & refuges · Vazzoler · Booking opens
Rifugio Vazzoler (CAI Conegliano): 2027 bookings open on 1 November 2026 at 12:00, postponed from the originally announced 5 October.
Huts & refuges · Venezia · Season
Rifugio Venezia (CAI Venezia, under the Pelmo): 2026 season was 13 June to 20 September. The 2027 season had not been published on 18 October 2026.
Permits & quotas · Braies bus booking
While the Braies valley traffic regulation is active, the buses to Lago di Braies (lines 439 and 442) must be booked and prepaid online; Mobilcard and guest cards are not valid in that period. From 16 September line 442 (from Dobbiaco/Toblach and Villabassa/Niederdorf) needs no reservation and takes cash on board. Walking to the lake from Ferrara or the railway stations of Monguelfo or Villabassa is always unrestricted.
Permits & quotas · Braies valley traffic 2026
Lago di Braies / Pragser Wildsee, 1 July to 15 September 2026: between 9:00 and 16:00 the Braies valley could be entered by public transport, on foot or by bike, or by car only with an online reservation or a valid transit permit. Arriving before 9:00 was allowed but did not guarantee parking. Restrictions ended on 16 September 2026; from then no reservation is needed (except the Prato Piazza toll road).
Permits & quotas · Braies valley traffic 2027
Traffic regulation of the Braies valley will be in place again in summer 2027; the dates, hours and booking rules had not been published on 18 October 2026 (the tourist association says details follow in spring 2027). The 2026 scheme ran 1 July to 15 September, 9:00 to 16:00.
Permits & quotas · Camping · Ampezzo park
Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites (Nuvolau, Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri area): camping with tents and campervans is not allowed in the park; sleep in the huts or in the valley. The regulation is published by Cortina's tourism site (undated; file dated December 2024).
Season · Early-season snow
Early in the season small snowfields can still lie on the high Vant dei Piazedìai (about 2,050 m) on the stage from Rifugio Sommariva to Pian de Fontana. No official snow bulletin for the route was found.
Season · Main season
June to September. Official tourism sources recommend this period for the route; huts are open June to September.
Official source wins. Permit and fee rules can change at short notice. If the official source says something different, follow it, and tell us so we can fix it.
Experienced hikers can do the Alta Via 1 independently: it is waymarked, there is a hut at the end of nearly every stage, and the paths need no technical gear if you take the bypasses. The catch is logistics. There is no central booking system, so you contact each rifugio separately, and opening dates, deposits and cancellation terms differ. Self-guided packages mainly solve that, by securing beds and sometimes adding transfers. A guide is worth considering for the graded EE stages, the ferrata sections, fog on the open plateaus and early-season snow. The Marmol ferrata on the last big day is the clearest case: it needs a harness kit and a head for heights, and the alternative is a long walking bypass.
Medians are per person, per day, land only, twin share, in USD at today's rate.
The Alta Via 1 is the classic high-level walk of the Dolomites: about 125 km in 12 official stages, from the turquoise Lago di Braies in South Tyrol south to Belluno in the Veneto. It links mountain rifugi rather than villages. You cross the lunar Fanes plateau, climb to the Lagazuoi hut at 2,752 m, pass beneath the Tofane, Nuvolau, Pelmo and the great Civetta wall, then drop into quieter limestone country around Pian de Fontana and the Schiara. The official figures count about 7,300 m of climbing and 8,400 m of descent. Most days are four to six hours on waymarked paths, but several stages are graded EE and a few have exposed ground or fixed ropes, each with a walking alternative. The final day is a long descent through the Val d'Ardo.
Official sources recommend June to September, and that is when the huts run. Mid-June to mid-September is the core window, though some huts open in late May or early June and a few stay open into October, while others close around 20 September, so a late-June or late-September trip can hit closed huts. In early summer, patches of old snow can linger on the high stages, such as the climb to Pian de Fontana. July and August bring the most stable conditions and the busiest huts. September is cooler and quieter, with shorter days and the chance of an early snowfall. Start early: afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Dolomites, and several stages are exposed.
You do not need a permit to walk the Alta Via 1, so the real constraint is beds. Each hut books separately, and the 2027 calendars are about to open: Rifugio Biella and Rifugio Vazzoler on 1 November 2026, Carestiato on 2 November and Nuvolau in January 2027, with deposits that are partly or entirely non-refundable. If you drive to Lago di Braies in summer, expect a booked time slot: in 2026 cars needed a reservation between 9:00 and 16:00 from 1 July to 15 September, and the scheme returns in 2027, with details due in spring. Walking in is always free, and the bus needs a booking while the scheme runs. Camping is not allowed in the Ampezzo nature park.

Other
It is a demanding but not technical hut-to-hut walk. The official figures are about 125 km, 7,300 m of ascent and 8,400 m of descent over 12 stages, with a high point of 2,752 m at Rifugio Lagazuoi. Stage grades range from T (easy trail) to EE and EEA (experienced hikers, some with equipment). The tourism portals say the paths are not particularly demanding and are equipped where difficult, and the one real ferrata stage has a walking bypass.
The official tourism portal gives 12 stages and an average of 12 to 13 days. It adds that skipping some passages reduces it to 8 or 9 stages. Some stages are short, such as the 6 km first day to Rifugio Biella, so many people combine them. Part-route trips are also common, because the line crosses roads at several passes.
Booking is strongly sensible but there is no single system. Each rifugio takes its own reservations and sets its own dates. For 2027, Rifugio Biella and Rifugio Vazzoler open bookings on 1 November 2026, Carestiato on 2 November, and Nuvolau in January 2027. Some huts take a 50% deposit that is not refunded. Check every night's hut directly, as seasons differ.
No. The route is mostly ordinary mountain paths. The stage into Rifugio 7 Alpini follows the Marmol ferrata (graded EE-EEA, grades I and II), and the official route sheet gives a walking bypass of about 13 km and 8 hours from Pian de Fontana. Two other stages have short exposed or rope-assisted parts, the descent from Nuvolau to Passo Giau and the Flaibani path round the Pelmo, and both have easier alternatives.
The official recommendation is June to September, when the huts are open. July and August are the most settled and busiest. Late June can still have snow patches on the high sections, and by mid-to-late September some huts have closed for the season. Always check each hut's dates, as they differ by several weeks.
The lake is reached by bus line 442 from Dobbiaco/Toblach and Villabassa/Niederdorf, or on foot from Ferrara or the railway stations of Monguelfo and Villabassa. In summer 2026, cars needed a reservation between 9:00 and 16:00 from 1 July to 15 September, and buses were bookable online only. A similar scheme returns in 2027. Outside the regulated dates you can drive or take the bus without booking.
